Psychosocial recovery coaching (NEW)

Psychosocial recovery coach

From July 2020, psychosocial recovery coaches (recovery coaches) will be available to support participants with psychosocial disabilities to live a full and contributing life.

Recovery coaches will support participants to take more control of their lives and to better manage the complex challenges of day-to-day living.

Recovery coaches will work collaboratively with participants, their families, carers, and other services to design, plan and implement a recovery plan, and assist with the coordination of NDIS and other supports.

Participants will have the option of selecting a recovery coach with lived experience or a recovery coach with learned knowledge of psychosocial disability and mental health.

Recovery coaches have been developed in consultation with people with lived experience of mental health issues, families and carers of people with mental health issues, and state and territory governments.

For more information, read:

What is a psychosocial disability?

Psychosocial disability is a term used to describe a disability that may arise from a mental health issue.

Not everyone who has a mental health condition will have a psychosocial disability, but for people who do, it can be severe, longstanding and impact on their recovery. People with a disability as a result of their mental health condition may qualify for the NDIS.

What is recovery?

The term ‘recovery’ is used widely throughout the mental health sector. It can have different meanings in different contexts.

The NDIA defines recovery as achieving an optimal state of personal, social and emotional wellbeing, as defined by each individual, whilst living with or recovering from a mental health condition.

For more information view the psychosocial disability recovery and the NDIS (PDF 774KB) or Glossary - key terms for understanding the NDIS and psychosocial disability (PDF 630KB).

These include:

    • choice and control for participants.
    • a lifetime commitment to supports and funding (enables hope and optimism).
    • provision of plan flexibility (enables support to be used to meet different needs at different times).
    • opportunities for increased social and economic participation.
    • disability-focused support which is recovery orientated.

Loyal Aid Australia is a registered NDIS Provider for 0106 Assist-Life Stage, Transition

A new support item called the Psychosocial Recovery Coaching (recovery coach) is now available for participants of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

    • What do Loyal Aid Australia recovery coaches offer to participants? A participant with funding for a recovery coach in their plan will have the option of selecting a recovery coach with either lived experience or with learned knowledge of psychosocial disability and mental health.
    • Psychosocial Recovery coaches are different from support coordinators in that they bring specialist knowledge and skills in psychosocial recovery, mental health, and service navigation within the mental health system. Given support coordination is an element of the recovery coach role, the NDIA will generally not be funding both in a participant’s plan.
    • Psychosocial recovery coaching supports will be delivered by providers in Registration Group 106 (Assistance in coordinating or managing life stages, transition and supports). Loyal Aid Australia is in Registration Group 106 (Assistance in coordinating or managing life stages, transition and supports).
    • How do Loyal Aid Australia Recovery coaches support participants with Psychosocial Disability? Our recovery coaches will support participants to take more control of their lives and to better manage the complex challenges of day-to-day living. Our Recovery Coaches meet the required tertiary qualifications (in peer work or mental health (minimum of Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or Certificate IV in Mental Health) or equivalent training; and/or a minimum of two years of experience in mental health-related work).
    • We work collaboratively with our participants, their families, carers and supports to design, plan, implement and adjust a recovery plan. We collaborate with the broader service system and will assist with the coordination of NDIS and other supports.
